Clans of Ireland Cultural Summit

Saturday 17th April 2021

14:00 hrs (GMT)

13:30 hrs (Delegate Log-in)

The 2021 Cultural Summit is being held on the Zoom portal on April 17th at 14:00 hrs and may be attended by all Member delegates and invitees from the comfort of their own homes. Unfortunately, due to the Covid Pandemic it is not possible to have the usual Summit in Dublin, where we can all attend in person and enjoy each other’s company. The Chair of Clans of Ireland, Nora Keohane Hickey, will introduce and moderate the Summit.

The most recent person to have joined the Board of Directors of Clans of Ireland, the published historian, Luke McInerney, is to be the first of our speakers at the Summit. He will address the Summit on “Medieval Learned families of the West of Ireland”, a subject in which he has particular interest, within his general research into the late medieval history of Gaelic Ireland.

Our second speaker of the Summit, Michael O’Crowley, is known to most delegates, as he has been a Member of the Board of Directors for many years and has played an active part at many previous summits. Although, residing in France, Michael frequently visits Ireland and has been deeply immersed in his own O’Crowley of Cork Clan and its history for many years. Michael will speak on “Irish Heraldry; Laws of Arms”.

It is expected that the Summit will close at approximately 17:00 hrs (GMT)

'The Tower Houses of Ireland' by Finola Finlay

Finola trained as a historian and archaeologist in Ireland but spent most of her life working in higher education in Canada. Now back in Ireland she has taken up her old pursuits and is immersed in cultural and heritage studies in West Cork. With her husband Robert Harris, she blogs at: roaringwaterjournal.com

In this talk Finola will use examples of tower houses in her own part of the country, West Cork, to address these questions: Who built them? For what purposes? How did they afford them? How were constructed and how did they function? What caused their decline? What is the future for those we have left? By the end of the talk she hopes you will all be able to look at a tower house with greater insight into the role they played in Irish history. You will also be able to impress your friends by tossing off terms like bartizan and machicolation!
