O'Dowd, O'Dubhda Clan gathering 2105 - report

O'Dowd gathering 2015

Those bearing some variation of the Ó Dubhda name flocked to the Ocean Sands Hotel, Enniscrone whose staff were most welcoming and helpful to the visitors from Ireland, England, Scotland, Holland, South Africa, Qutar, Australia, USA, Canada including for the first time from the French speaking Quebec.
The Gathering consisted of four days of tours, lectures, meetings, the election of Tánaiste and Inauguration of Taoiseach followed by lots of celebration and social interaction usually lasting into the early hours.
The Clan were particularly grateful to Sligo Co. Co. who in association with the National Roads Authority have erected a new chair to commemorate the life, death and extraordinary work of Dualtach Mac Fhirbhisigh at the N59 layby Screen Beg, Screen Co. Sligo. They are also very grateful to Mayo Co. Co. who have begun work on the planned "Monasteries on the Moy" greenway from Ballina to Killala and would welcome a similar project from Ballina to Enniscrone and the beautiful coast of Tireragh thereby encouraging much needed tourism to the local area.
This was the 25th anniversary of the first Gathering of the modern era organised by Enniscrone man Conor Mac Hale in 1990 who gave an excellent lecture on the Heritage of the Ó Dubhda Clan and conducted most of the tours. Dr. Nollaig Ó Muraile who hails from Knock gave a very iluminating lecture on the Great Book of Genealogies by Dubhaltach Mac Fhirbhisigh which Dr. Ó Muraíle translated and published in 2004. Proinsias Mag Fhionnghaile gave an extraordinary talk on Ancient Gaelic dress. In fact Proinsias is about to start a business to sell traditional Irish clothing the website is www.gaelicattire.com and will be operational shortly. Mike Dowd from Brisbane, Australia also gave a ground breaking talk about the origins of St. Patrick and his connections to the local area.
San Francisco born woman, Kieran O'Dowd was elected Tánaiste by the Clan which means the that the next Taoiseach of the Ó Dubhda Clan in 2018 is to be a woman for the first time in history. The Inauguration of Andrew Dowds Glasgow as the new Taoiseach was conducted on the megalithic tomb in the Castle Field Enniscrone replacing Kilglass born  Brendan O'Dowd who organised this  event.
The visitors toured the area with the fantastic Oisin from McGrath Coaches to see some of the many notable sites such as forts, megalithic tombs, castles, Churches including the Carromore Megalithic burial grounds, The Beach Bar, Aughris, the Franciscan monasteries of Moyne and Rosserk and the Augustinian abbey, Ardnaree, finally finishing in the wonderful Beleek Castle.
An extraordinary and particularly mellow whiskey was specially blended in Scotland for the occasion and the delightful, Irish produced but (unfortunately for Irish people) the "for export only", O'Dowds Irish Cream liqueur were heartily enjoyed during the Gathering.
While everyone has to return to their respective homes for another three years the Clan continues to remain connected  through Facebook- Proud to be an O'Dowd, email and the O'Dubhda Clan website http://www.odubhda-odowdclan.com/
Everyone is looking forward to returning to Enniscrone from October 4th to 7th 2018.
