Geoghegan Clan Gathering

Venue: Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland.
Date: 9–13 August, 2015
Website:http://www.geoghegan.org/clan:

More Info:

The Geoghegan Clan has been regularly gathering from all corners of the world every five years since the year 2000. Each year ending in “0” or “5” commences with a buzz as clan members anticipate the coming event. 2015 will be no different and may be the biggest yet, with fifty already committed attendees.

The week will commence on Sunday 9th August, with the early arrivals meeting in Thyme Restaurant Athlone, to finalise the fringe events before the official gathering proper. All of the local events will no doubt be sampled, including a Viking longship trip on the Shannon, a visit to Athlone Castle, A trip to Clonmacnoise and an outing to Dun na Si heritage centre and park in Moate. The more adventurous are planning excursions further afield to places like Tara and Newgrange, Galway (where one branch of the Geoghegans was transplanted by Cromwell) and the Cliffs of Moher. Of course there will be plenty of opportunity for the clan to swap and share data and family history and local Geoghegans will be on hand to suggest places of interest and information.

The official events will kick off with the great clan banquet in Hatter’s Lane Bistro on Wednesday evening 12th August. The Clan will make merry and our outgoing Chieftain, Jim Geoghegan, will be confirmed as head of the clan for a further five years – unless a usurper appears from the ranks to challenge Jim in mortal combat. Next day, Thursday 13th August, the clan will gather for a guided bus tour of the ancient Geoghegan territory and other places of interest. The bus will pick up at Athlone at 9:00am and Horseleap at 9:30am then head for Jamestown House / Cloch Stocach and Carn Castle (two Geoghegan strongholds) then on to Uisneach, where our ancestor, Fiacha, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages held sway and brought the curse of St. Patrick on the Geoghegans (the curse was that no decendant of Fiacha would ever hold the High Kingship of Ireland – and none ever has). From there we head to Castletown Geoghegan for the obligatory photo opportunity then lunch in Tyrellspass Castle. After lunch we will visit Rathue and Cnoc Bua (Knockboe), where our Chieftain will be (re)inaugurated. The last stop will be at Durrow Abbey and Well near Kilbeggan.

That ends the official part of the gathering, but no doubt many of the clan will remain in the area afterwards exploring new sights and friendships.
