UN Recognition

The United Nations has extended recognition to Clans of Ireland as a civil society non governmental organisation.
This means that Clans of Ireland has been recognised by the UN as the representative authority for Irish Clans.


Government Minister to Confer Order of Clans of Ireland
The Minister for Trade, Tourism and Transport will confer the Order of Clans of Ireland on 4 individuals at a special ceremony at the Mansion House on Saturday 28th April 2012. The Minister has agreed to stand in for the Patron of Clans of Ireland President Higgins who was not available to attend the ceremony this year. Those chosen to receive the Order of Clans of Ireland were nominated by their Clans as an acknowledgement of their outstanding contributions to Irish heritage and culture.


"Royal Harpist" to Play at Clans of Ireland Conferring

Clans of Ireland is delighted to announce that harpist Áine Ní Dhubhghaill has agreed to perform at the conferring of the Clans of Ireland Order of Merit in the Mansion House, Dublin on the 28th April. Áine is from Dublin and was immersed in Irish traditional music from an early age. She has had numerous performances at harp festivals and concerts around the world including the US, Hungary, the Netherlands, Brittany, Wales, Scotland, England, Germany and Vietnam. She has premiered compositions by one of Scotland’s foremost harper composers, Savourna Stevenson and Dr Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. Her recordings include several film scores and CDs and a feature on renowned Irish broadcaster Ciarán MacMathúna's RTÉ’s "A Touch of the Master's Hand" and the recently released RTÉ CD “ Masters of the Irish Harp”. As a Concert Harpist, Áine has played with orchestras and ensembles including the RTÉCO and the RTÉNSO. She teaches harp at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and has been a committee member of Cairde na Cruite for many years. Áine is co-editor of Rogha na gCruitirí, Harpers’ Choice – 100 traditional tunes for Irish harp, published by Cairde na Cruite in 2010 to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. In May 2011 she was chosen by President McAleese to play for Queen Elizabeth II when she visited Áras an Uachataráin.

Clans of Ireland was sad to hear of the recent passing of the late Dr. Ramón O'Dogherty, Chief of the Name, in Cadiz, Spain (92 years of age). Dr. O'Dogherty was a Physician in Spain where his ancestors had settled in the 17th century. He studied Medicine at the Universities of Cadiz and Madrid. He was a member of the Royal Academies of Medicine of Palma de Mallorca, of San Romualdo of Letters, Arts and Sciences and was a member of the Supreme Council of the Knights Hospitaller of St. John the Baptist in Cadiz. In 1990, Dr. O'Dogherty visit his ancient territory in Donegal where he was acclaimed at an inauguration ceremony by a gathering of over 200 members of his clan. He was also a member of the Standing Council of Irish Chiefs and Chieftains. He is survived by his wife Doña Catalina Fabra, daughters Cristina and Begoña, and his Tanist Ramón who will succeed his father as Chief of the Name.
 


Chief Herald of Ireland to Join Forum

The Chief Herald of Ireland Ms. Colette O'Flaherty will participate in the Forum on the Future of Irish Clans which will be held
at the Mansion House in Dublin on the 27th April 2012. The Forum is being organised by the board of Clans of Ireland to consider
Irish Clans, Past, Present and Future. As well as the Chief Herald the Forum will be attended by other guests including, Dr. Nollaig Ó MUraille (NUIG), Dr. Catherine Simms (TCD), Patrick Guinness (DNA Expert), members of the Standing Council of Irish Chiefs and Chieftains, and members of the board of Clans of Ireland. The Forum is part of an ongoing process of consultation to develop a strategic vision for Clans of Ireland.


New Codes for Members Section

The annual roll over of registrations is almost complete with the publication of the 2012 Register of Irish Clans. All Clans listed on the Register have now been issued with codes to access the Members Only section of this website.
 


 

Royal Patron for Mac Clafferty of Ulster Clan.

 
The Mac Clafferty of Ulster Clan is pleased to announce that on the 15th March 2012
His Royal Highness Prince Dom Miguel de Braganca, Infante of Portugal and Duke of Viseu, was pleased to accept the office of Royal Patron of the Mac Clafferty of Ulster Clan. His Royal Highness was presented with a piece of Irish Bog Oak by the Clan Commander Sean McClafferty who was Invested on the occasion as a Knight in the Royal Order of St Michael of the Wing by the Duke.

O'Brien Clan Raising a Monument to Brian Boru

The O'Brien Clan are working to mark the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf with a number of events in 2014. One of their main goals for the annivesary will be to erect a statue of Brian Boru who was the Irish king who ended the domination of the High Kingship of Ireland by the Uí Néill, made himself King of Munster and subjugated Leinster, making himself ruler of the south of Ireland. He is the founder of the O’Brien dynasty and symbolic leader of the led the Irish legions at the Battle of Clontarf. Further information is available from www.obrienclan.com

 


St. Patrick's Day - Order of Merit Announced



The Council of the Order of Clans of Ireland announces the names of the individuals to be honoured in 2012. Having been nominated, those who receive the award of Companion of the Order of Clans of Ireland (CIOM) were selected by the Council of the Order based on their contributions to Irish Clans, Culture and Heritage. The Order will be conferred on these individuals at ceremonies in Ireland, the USA and Thailand over the coming months. Please visit our Order of Merit section to find out more.

Annual General Meeting 2012

The 2012 Annual General Meeting of Clans will take place on Saturday 28th April in the Oak Room at the Mansion House, Dawson Street, Dublin 2. We are grateful to the Lord Mayor of Dublin for inviting us again to hold the AGM and conferring of the Order of Clans of Ireland at his official residence. Further details will be issued in early 2012 but in the meantime put the date in your diaries.

New Irish American Museum to Open in USA

For the past two years a group of Irish Americans led by Connecticut businessman Carl Shanahan has been working to create a national museum in Washington, D.C., to honour Ireland’s legacy in America. The goal of the Irish American Museum of Washington, D.C., is to become a major cultural institution that will bring Irish-American history to life for visitors of all ages, from all ethnic, racial, and cultural back- grounds. The museum will initially be housed in temporary gallery space; ultimately, the plan is for a prestigious establishment that will provide future generations of Irish-Americans a sense of their history. Clans of Ireland Congratulates New President

The Cathoirleach of Clans of Ireland, Ms. Norah Hickey Keohane has written to Mr. Michael D. Higgins to congratulate him on his election as 9th President of Ireland. Having achieved a massive vote from over one million people Mr. Higgins was inaugurated at a special ceremony in Dublin Castle on 11 November. In his inaugural address  President Higgins said that he will seek to achieve an inclusive society in Ireland where every citizen participates and everyone is treated with respect. President Higgins' family hail from Limerick and he is a member of the O'Higgins Clan Society.

The board of Clans of Ireland invite nominations for the Order of Merit from Clans that have been registered for 3 consecutive years or more. All nominations will be considered by the Council of the Order of Clans of Ireland and will be presented at the AGM in April 2012. Please note that Clans who successfully nominate an individual to the Order of Clans of Ireland will be expected to cover the cost of the insignia awarded to the individual. The deadline for receipt of nominations is 31 December 2011. Nomination forms are available in the members section of the website www.clansofireland.ie  



McGillycuddy's Exhortation for Ireland

The McGillycuddy of the Reeks, Chief of the Name, continues to call on all clan leaders to use their clan organisation to aid economic recovery in Ireland by promoting Irish goods for sale around the world. A simple request to a local supermarket anywhere in the world can result in increased sales of Irish goods and a financial benefit to Ireland. You may seek advice on how to contact Irish export companies through your local Irish Embassy or Consulate.




   2012 Festival and Events Initiative



A new grant is available from Fáilte Ireland to support organisations who bring people together for festivals and events that include an overnight stay at the location where the festival or event takes place. Many Irish Clans might qualify for this grant if they are holding a gathering in Ireland in 2012. Further details are available from Fáilte Ireland.

Irish Genealogical Records

The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Mr. Jimmy Deenihan has launched further Roman Catholic records of Baptism, Marriage and Burial for County Cork and Dublin City. These historical records are now searchable on the Irish Genealogy website.  




Vanishing Ireland

'Recollections of Our Changing Times', the third volume of the acclaimed 'Vanishing Ireland' series by Turtle Bunbury & photographer James Fennell was launched in October with two well-attended events at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin and the Hunt Museum, Limerick City where legendary GAA commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh gave a most eloquent speech. The two previous volumes were short-listed for the Irish Published Book of the Year at the 2007 and 2010 Irish Book Awards respectively. The project is a collaboration between Turtle and James and accounts for nearly 200 insightful & poignant portrait interviews with the unsung elders of Irish society. President Obama Thanks Genealogists

During his recent visit to Ireland President Obama expressed his gratitude to the research staff at Eneclann who were responsible for tracing his Irish ancestry. Although people may think of Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy as more obviously Irish Americans, President Obama's Irish roots can be traced back further than either of these two previous US Presidents.



Chief of Name Welcomes President Higgins to Remembrance Service

The O'Morchoe of Oulartleigh, Chief of the Name and the Murphy Sept of Leinster was on duty on Sunday 13 November when in his capacity as President of the British Legion Ireland he welcomed President Higgins and his wife Sabina to St. Patrick's Cathedral. The President and The O'Morhcoe led the congregation at the National Remembrance Service which is held annually in Dublin.
