Welcome to the official website of Clans of Ireland ~ Finte na hÉireann, an independent permanent authority established in 1989 to authenticate and register Irish Clans and historical families; to promote the interests of Irish Clans at home and abroad; and unite them into a cohesive cultural movement.

The reforming and registration of Irish Clans is actively encouraged by Clans of Ireland, and membership of the organisation is open to all Clans and historical families whose surnames are of Irish origin, or whose ancestors had a presence in Ireland prior to the Great Famine (1845-1852). Accordingly, the Register of Clans of Ireland includes families of Irish, Norse, Anglo-Norman, Scottish, Gallowglass, Huguenot, and Quaker origins.

Clans of Ireland enthusiastically promotes Irish historical research, and in conjunction with the Standing Council of Irish Chiefs and Chieftains, the History Department of Trinity College Dublin, and History Ireland magazine, we sponsor an annual essay competition on Gaelic Ireland, which has resulted in the recent publication of an anthology of essays entitled Politics, kinship and culture in Gaelic Ireland, c.1100 – c.1690, edited by Joseph Mannion and Katharine Simms.

Anyone wishing to connect with their Irish Clan or historical family is advised to consult the Register of Clans 2018 and communicate with the Clan contact directly. If your Clan is not registered and you would like to explore the possibility of doing so, please consult our Registration page. On the other hand, if you would like to establish a Clan society with a view to reviving your ancestral Clan, we will endeavour to assist in any way that we can.
